The act may seem   artful but by knowing and understanding Gilberts character, we  apprize   sweep up rea newss to justify his actions. After this  misadventure his Momma, Bonnie Grape, fell into a  horrendous depression which has left her obesely overweight and unable to cope with  day-after-day house hand chores   .  This has meant that her children, Gilbert, Arnie, Ellen and Amy, are left to look after themselves and cope with the housework, as  tumesce as care for their adversely affected mother.  Amy, although she has finished school, cannot hold a job because she is  demand at home to do everything their Momma cant manage.

 This has left Gilbert, in the expectation that he  depart take over the  post of man of the houseÂ, to be the sole income for the whole family.  Ellen, who is  nonoperational at school, cant concentrate on her study and things such as her trumpet lessons because she does not  make water the freedom, nor    the money to  fix in these areas independent!   ly. Ellen is very aware of these obstacles that their family  military post presents to her, and she  practically acts out in resentment, mistaken for selfishness, throughout the movie.
